Any questions you'd ask Jennifer Egan? What are you wondering about A Visit from the Goon Squad?
Her 10-year-old thinks he will be a MLB 1st Baseman soon. She thought writing would be as easy, too.
Even her Mom hid from her after reading her first works.
Egan doesn't write about her life at all. At least not consciously.
Egan needs the illusion that it's not about her. Why? It bores her.
Writes by hand...illegibly. Not sure what she is even writing and can't double check it.
Forget a character name whilst writing? Change it.
Out of Body, told in the second person by Rob, was solidified by a man she saw on the subway.
Empathy & extrapolation...Egan invents someone and then feels behind them a force...but not a connection. Empathy.
Likability. Do you need to like the characters to like the book, the story? What do you think?
Won the Pulitzer Prize by avoiding writing something else. Amazing.
Why? Why do characters do certain things? Motivation is key. Answering and discovering the world of a character.
Do any of you have any comments about Egan's writing? Post them here. Ask away.
Kerri gets a big laugh. Good crowd here. Great discussion.
Idea of reader knowing more than the characters. Does it feel like the reader asks - why don't they get it already?! - Kerri
Dickens makes us feel like we are all on their side - Egan.
Egan to read from Safari section.
I liked most of these characters. I really felt the short stories added up to a more cohesive whole, like Kissing in Manhattan by David Schickler.
But I don't NEED to like a character to love a book. Can we like Humbert Humbert? Well, sort of, I guess. Do we like Ignatius J. Reilly?
The Warblers include members of Suicide Commandos.
