Top 8 facts about Minnesota's brewing history
The early brewers used a mix of local and imported ingredients. Many purchased their barley directly from local farmers and malted it at the brewery. In the 1860s and 1870s some of the hops also came from the region, but a blight wiped out the crops in the mid-1870s. Many hops came from elsewhere in the US, and we know some brewers were importing German hops from Hallertau and elsewhere.
