"White Dog's Pipe. I was so very, very glad it was returned to the Dakota people. The story of the Dakota War means something to me. I come from an Irish American family who lived through the Dakota War in Kandiyohi County. My family gave the Dakota food and the Dakota helped on their small farm. I think my Irish ancestors understood starvation leaving it behind in Ireland. The war was a very dangerous time for both cultures. No one won. Certainly not the Dakota. Their loss was devastating." — Jeanne Shields
